Wore out three sets of tires already!
...... I have sold cars for over a million dollars, but this bike sale today seemed like it took longer than any of those deals, but I enjoyed every minute of the day.

That is what what Reggie Jackson said after a 7 hour day with him yesterday including going out for lunch, talking on the phone with my son about the A's, him taking my flip phone and taking 5 minutes to figure out how to add him as a saved contact which I have never added a contact before in my life and knew nothing about, then telling me he had a phone like mine once and tried his best to show me some of the features on it, a a tour of the classic cars he had in his building, and the bikes.

Very long day yesterday which started with my taking a trip to Monterey to discuss with the owner who wanted to pick my brains and possibly sell some of a truckload of bikes he owned that were just delivered a few weeks before from the east coast to his place in Monterey. This was all done through a third party. I had an address and was told by the third party that the owner Reggie would be there to meet me, no last name given and never thought twice about the name Reggie. So I went yesterday and to start with I just assumed it was a house I was going to, but it was a warehouse, and who but Reggie Jackson whom I have never met was there to greet me. Anyway after a long tour he gave me of his car collection, taking the covers off of a lot of of them, showing me factory chalk marks, telling me and showing with a flashlight a little about each car. Motorcycles, Whizzers, balloon tire bikes, were spread out all through the building, even in the bathroom. He had most of the Stingray's and other brand muscle bikes pretty much all together for me in a few spots. He told me he has sold cars, even a collection of cars at Mecum Auctions, as well as Stingray bikes but wanted to know more about his bikes. It started out with him asking me what I thought were the rarest, most collectable bikes in his collection. I went straight over to a 1968 Lemon Peeler and Orange Krate that after a quick but not a thorough inspection by any means looked like original bikes including those hard to find seats on 1968 Krate bikes, one was an early 68 bike which also had the pogo seat post and original knobby colored line knobby tire and colord line superior front. I said if after a longer inspection and if those bikes were all original I would give my right arm for those bikes, and he said then he would probably be keeping them for sure. Anyway after hours of bike discussions I bought a bike from him, left the door open on some others, and he gave me another 2 to take home to try and sell on consignment for him. It was a very nice day with a very nice gentlemen, can not say that enough about my experience with him. I will figure out next week what I have with the 2 bikes on consignment, today I am getting ready to do a swap tomorrow in Galt CA.

Oh, and excuse those blurry photos taken with my old Kodak camera. And I told Reggie I would be posting pics of him online, the bikes and cars. He said of course that was OK.

Alright!
Reggie is still looking good!
I used to see him around town, when he lived in Newport Beach, Ca.
He was always a good sport as we’d wave to him as he drove by in one of his many outstanding cars.
Thanks for the insight into his other passions.
I had no idea, he had an interest in classic bicycles.
Looks like his taste in bikes matches his excellence in all his other exploits.

That is awesome! So did you have him autograph the bike?!

Great question. We had a few conversations about if and where to sign the bikes. He was willing to sign anything, anywhere. He was going to sign the bike I purchased on the seat, I stopped him as it was a nice original seat. Then we discussed where or if to sign bikes. Another nice bike I got on consignment we left unsigned. His bikes were all nice, but a 1965 coppertone bike I got also on consignment he signed. That was one of only a few early or even coaster brake as he seemed to prefer more muscle type bikes to go with most of his cars. The coppertone bike was probably near the bottom of his bikes in condition and original parts but still a great bike, so we decided to sign it on the underside of the frame. The bottom of the crank was not large enough we thought and he wanted to add Mr. October to the signature as he did.. I have attached some pics of that. The other bikes he said if I or any purchaser of the unsigned bikes wanted it signed it should not e a problem. I am smiling as I type this as these were some long and lengthy discussions between a couple of seniors, mind you I know we were both pretty sharp, but this and certificates of authenticity and all sorts of long conversations were probably the reason I did not get out of there until it was starting to get dark. It was his idea to sort of jazz up the coaster coppertone bike he got a youth/kids Rawlings old Reggie Jackson glove he signed and put on the handle bars. He also wanted to make sure I tell everyone that he knows it is not correct to have a right handed glove as it was as the glove he got was as he was left handed but went on to explain that Rawlings were selling these to be used as gloves of course and there were more right handers than lefties so most of the gloves they sent him were right handed gloves. He did hand write some letters of authenticity on his letterhead stationary with the bike serial numbers, type of bike and such. I'm still smiling, I had fun.

Oh man, I would have let the kid sign whatever wherever his instincts told him to! This story made my night. Who would have thought Mr October is a bike guy too? I have a cereal box card signed by Reggie somewhere I’m going to have to dig up now. Happy for you both to have such a great time. Thank you for sharing.

Same, had several Reggie sightings on PCH, and Mac Arthur near the airport. He walked by me at the Pomona swap meet. Swear that guy was everywhere.

I had a similar experience in the mid 90’s. He came to a so cal meet at the end and bought a bike and I think 2 pedal cars and wanted to know if I could deliver to his warehouse in Costa Mesa. I said sure and I followed him over to the warehouse and everyone was honking and waving. I toured his collection and he signed a ball for my son and was really a personable guy. It was awesome!

Wow, what a great story! Thanks for sharing it with us! That’s so cool he’s a Monterey Bay resident. I’ve been one my whole life too, and an A’s fan. He definitely was one of my heroes growing up! Glad he’s looking and doing great! What an amazing day you had!!!
