For over 20 years, I have been looking for an original one of these. Ever since I saw a picture of what looked to be a vintage bicycle shop from the 30s or 40s with a bunch of bikes in this type of bicycle parking rack. I had never seen one in person till 15 years ago. It was in thrift store and the owner would have nothing to do with selling it. I tried for 10 years to buy from them and they always turn me down. I decided to have this made by my fabricator, I was going have this displayed in my front yard. The plan was to let it completely patina out with four vintage rat carcasses of pre-war bikes locked in there, like they have been left locked together for a century. lo and behold 3 days after I brought this home, I took my Sunday stroll through the center of my town that houses all the antique shops and I swear had it been a snake this original one(last pic) was underneath a bunch of other things, would’ve bit me. My plan was to always make this like one of the western Union bike racks like you see in the second to the last picture. So now I am offering the reproduction one, which is slightly different in the number of places as I wanted to be able to put in assortment of different bikes, if it came to pass. I am only trying to recoup my initial cost, not trying to make money off this venture. I’m located in Central California the town is Clovis right next to Fresno. If you are interested in this, I will be taking up several bikes to Sacramento soon so if you’re within the 99 highway corridor up through that area I could bring it with me with full payment. This is definitely something that could either be patented like I was planning or easily powder coated to your liking what a cool weighted display some bikes and something that is very period correct in style.
