Looks like an early Singer probably about 1879 -1880. The Singer "Special Challenge" model has an open head design so I'm not quite sure which model this is with a closed head. Irregardless, I'm leaning towards it being a Singer. The brake on the rear wheel is connected with a cable of twine that ran up the backbone through eyelets and connected to the handlebar. So to brake the handlebar was spun around to tighten up on the cable. Considering the condition of roads back then, not exactly an effective way to stop. Too much mud or horse droppings.
