Are handgrips colored throughout or dyed?

Wore out three sets of tires already!
I have a decent pair of coke bottle grips. They were red but time has turned them tan. I lightly scuffed one with a Scotchbrite pad in an already bad area of the grip. I was able to see gray plastic show through. Inside the grip they are bright red. The grips are still pliable also. The question now is can I dye these with vinyl dye and expect it to last if prepped properly? I realize they are a high wear item.

I think you should be able to get away with vinyl dye, I think the only prep is thoroughly wash with soapy water, rinse, and dry. I've used the stuff on hard plastic controls and they are still fine. I've heard that if you put to much on in one coat it can melt a bit. It might not come out glossy mine came out eggshell, but it may vary on the surface type.
