Why is the end of the coupler broken off of one side?

That's what happened on my second rebuild. The first one broke the lower window hole.

I've never seen the hook broken off but have seen the window broken out a few times. The window broken I believe was caused by improper disassembly, either in the wrong gear or taken apart from the brake arm side (at least the ones I've encountered).
Something must be hanging up because there is not a lot of force on that normally.
