I just came across this little bit of info on Berry Cohen.
It’s kind of cool to see a picture of the man himself.
His most well known attribute to the hobby, was his introduction of the BC Jiffy Stand.
BC stands for, Berry Cohen of course.
I was always curious as to the usage of the name Jiffy Stand.
I knew that Harley Davidson motorcycles were well known for their side stand by the same name, so I wondered if maybe Berry Cohen was the inventor in that case as well?
As luck would have it, the latest issue of HOG, formerly known as the Enthusiast, arrived this week, with a short article on the origin of the Harley Davidson version of the Jiffy Stand.
No connection to Berry Cohen that I can see, though they both function with the same up and down locking feature, and the bicycle stand also uses the weight of the bike to lock it in the down position.
I guess, I need’nt wonder any more, about the origin of the word “Jiffy” to describe these particular side stands.
They both could be deployed in a Jiffy, so what else would you call such a handy little devise?
Thanks, Berry!
Thanks, Bill!
Much appreciated!
P.S. One interesting thing, that I just noticed, is that Arthur R. Constantine is also listed as the Co Inventor of the H-D Jiffy Stand.
He is the guy that went to work for Arnold Schwinn & Co, and designed the 1925 - 31 Excelsior Henderson, Super X & KJ models.
