When using a piece of wood for a drift, a lot of force is lost in the soft composition of the wood. Something solid works much better. Even an old large straight tipped screwdriver will work well. A heavy, dense drift, and a large hammer make quick work of these cups. I have a solid 1/2” piece of round steel (fits inside a pipe to make an extension handle for a breaker bar) and a 4# short handled sledge hammer. Takes about 3 hits spaced around the circumference to pop one out. Keep one eye where you’re hammering and the other on the other side of the room to spot where the cup winds up; it will go flying.
