Riding my double-diamond C-Model. Yes, I said it.
To borrow a term from Tyler @mr.cycleplane and his numerous pleasant offerings here, this one is from the SoCal Stash.
Offered here is a near pristine Schwinn C-Model hanging tank from about 1940. I purchased it from Gertrude Vorgang at the Pedal Pusher in the summer of 1980 when I was 15 years old. She allowed me to put it on a 3-month layaway to accomodate my paper route earnings - the price was $80.00.
She stated that the tank was NOS, it was taped around the middle with masking tape but otherwise in fantastic shape. My dream was to build a bike with it and a frame I had purchased from her a few months later. The bike I was building was mocked up in 2020, and as far as I could tell was the first time the tank had screws in it.
I became fascinated with the C-Model but as I got into it I wanted to build an early '36-'37 version with a hornlight. Since this tank does not have a provision for a switch or conduit and did not want to cut or drill, I decided to switch gears, and spent the next 2 years acquiring parts for an earlier model. It is hard to believe that when I bought this tank it was only 40 years old! I have kept it safe, wrapped in a t-shirt all this time.
I had wondered what the best way to remove the mummified tape residue, leaving it unaddressed until just before this listing. Researching on the CABE someone mentioned that using Ronsonol lighter fluid might be the best way to remove it without harming the paint and that is what I very carefully used, I spent about an hour after testing a small area on the bottom and it worked!, slowly. Some of the residue is still present but the tank is very presentable.
Paint is un-faded and vibrant, glossy, and reflective, with some paint-loss on the upper surface of the left side, with small ticks of loss in several areas, paint is not flaky. There are also a couple of very small pressure dings to note.
Sellers (mostly on eBay) use the term NOS with impunity, with pieces showing clear wear and tear being presented as shelf-wear, so I am not claiming this is NOS, but I can say that it has been taken care of since I have had it.
Shipping in a thick tube will be $20.00, fully insured for the purchase price.
