Jesse McCauley

McCauley Cycle Works
Original proprietary pedal set for a Men's Pope / Columbia built bicycle from the late 1890's - early 1900's which used the oversized fine thread pedal.
The pedal axles are distinctly larger and use the inner square head vs. a traditional pedal wrench.

Men's size, condition as shown. axles turn but could use rebuilding.

Cruisin' on my Bluebird
The larger 9/16" fine thread (rather than the more common 1/2" fine thread) was used on Columbia tandems to take the increased stress of two riders although I have seen this larger thread on singles.
The reason for the internal square drive on Jesse's pedals was to get the inner side plate as close to the crank arm as possible to decrease leverage force on the pedal axle by eliminating the normal pedal wrench flats width that occupied this space and thus a shorter and stronger pedal axle.
