I'd like to swap out my 18 tooth rear cog for something a little bigger to make it a little easier to navigate some hills. I have a single speed, red-striped, Bendix hub. I don't understand the compatibility of the cogs to other years or even other manufacturers. For example, this 22T cog is for a Bendix hub but the description says compatible with 1963-1996.

If this isn't the correct cog for a 1962 Bendix, what should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Are you sure your Typhoon is actually a 1962 model? It could be a 1963 model with a late 62 serial number.

Schwinnstore's prices, your link, have the highest prices you'll ever find.

This one is way cheaper. Maybe send the seller a message to make sure it will fit.

That Schwinnstore gear was made after the Bendix move to Mexico in the 1970s.... Do show a photo of your frame and the serial number. Also a shot of your brake arm!

Just back tracked. Looks like it's a 62 with the continuous twin bar. So, what is the difference between the 63 and up and the older Bendix coaster sprockets? Spline verses three nubs? I only collect 5 speeds. lol :p

You need to determine if your hub's cogs are threaded (Red Band - YOP 1961 to 1963) or have the three tabs and snap ring (RB-2 - YOP May '63 onwards). Bendix changed that threaded design in May of '63 to their Red Band 2 model. It is possible to have a '63 Schwinn with the earlier RB Bendix hub as it falls on the cusp of the model changeover.

Many of the three tab cogs on the market will fit a RB-2 hub with the exception of some Shimano cogs. The tabs have dimples on them which interfere with a snug fit of the snap ring (which could be unhealthy for you and the bike - no brakes!).

I won't argue about the price difference, but in fairness you are comparing a Schwinnstore NOS Bendix 22T cog with a new Taiwanese cog.

The first link I posted was the identical Bendix cog for 5 bucks less. (lotsofparts) price at 20 bucks shipped plus you get the brake arm strap. ;)

Wow, thanks to everyone for the replies. Unfortunately I'm away from the bike until the weekend. When I get back, looks like I'll need to determine if I have a three lug, or spline or maybe even threaded cog. The exploded views help a lot and its a big step forward to just understand that there is an RB and an RB-2 model. Really, thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it.
