We are talking about a steel Corvette frame. I wouldn’t consider that lightweight. It feels like the comments above might discourage @soddruntlestuntle from trying to spread his frame. It’s really not that hard,
No matter how you open the stays, you will have to adjust it to make sure the stays are spread evenly. The fundamental steps are covered in the video I linked including re-squaring the dropouts/fork ends.
I have not used the string method to check alignment yet but I’ve seen other people doing it. Looks like you can use your eyes to quickly gage what’s up. Thanks for describing it @Schwinn Sales West and noting it is covered in the service manuals.
