Claysgarage

Finally riding a big boys bike
I bought a Elgin yesterday and the fellow I bought it from said it was a one
owner. The owner was is dad, but his dad had passed on. He wanted me to find out what year bike it was.
I found the following under crank housing: SE MOD-502 197 SER 58046
Also would like to know if anyone has history of Elgin Bike Company?

Elgin was a badge name used by Sears on the bicycles they sold. Their bicycles were predominantly supplied to them by Murray and Westfield. The bike you have was made by Murray and the various features and paint mark it as built during late 1941 or very early 1942.

The “SE” stamping might indicate 1940-E, for a Murray-built Sears Elgin.
The stamping, “MOD-502” refers to the Sears model (mod) number prefix code (502) that reflected the manufacturer;
MOD-502 would not indicate 1939.
A 1939-D Sears Elgin would be stamped “SD” (and not “SE” for 1940-E).

At least it's someone that's still on the Cabe even if it is a 12 yr old Question ( you know its old when RMS37 responded ), I really crack up when someone here responds to a old thread that the person only joined to ask a question and never returned, I'm really curious if people look at the date before responding, I've hate it when I get excited about something somebody bumped up ready to send a PM till I notice the date:mad:, hey still have that bike @Claysgarage
