Look Ma, No Hands!
I picked up this child's bike just because it was neat but not my area of knowledge. I've not found anything on the net for it. It is a De-Luxe Thunder and head badge has Crain Bike Co Rockaway Beach, NY. It's missing a few parts on front and back fenders which I assume a light and reflector were there. Looks like at the front of the tank to the handlebar neck it maybe missing a part there. Also has no kickstand. Any info on dating this bike and what maybe missing would greatly be appreciated. Haven't been able to find anything on Net. Posted in the Kid's Bikes/Tricycles section but no info responses.

Thanks!

Like mine (see below link), think a Pal or AMF product. I have all pieces available except wheels, and the large frame sections.
Mine was missing the original guard, truss rods and tank. Yours has the optional coaster brake. My bars, rack and saddle are rather nice.

Hello Mike,

Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful time capsule.

Find it a fascinating cycle in the way it transitions from child's tricycle to child's bicycle. While it has the general layout & appearance of a bicycle it retains the bushings chainset and headset as well as the nutted pedals more often seen on a tricycle.

Just imagine the little fellow of three or four years trundling down the steps to the living room to find this beside the tree on Christmas morn with a big red bow! His eyes growing wide as saucers with delight! He now has a bike like big brother's only in a size just right for him.

Suspect the marking on the head emblem to be Chain Bike Corp. rather than Crain Bike Corp. Chain Bike Corp is the entity behind Ross brand wheelgoods. They were once HQ'ed in Rockaway Beach:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_(bicycle_company)

Interesting that the artist who created the aircraft image for the tank appears to have based it on the Convair Delta Dagger or the AVRO Vulcan.

The name "Thunder Jet" a reference to breaking the sound barrier and the resulting sonic boom.

Continuing the link between bicycles and aviation begun at Kittyhawk...

Artist chose to show exhaust/boom as a series of smoke rings behind the plane. This ironically presaged a secret propulsion technologie to come along half a century later as employed on "pumpkin seed" experimental aircraft. Sometimes referred to by aviation enthusiasts as the "soap-on-a-rope" or "donuts-on-a-rope" due to the series of smoke rings which can be seen in the bird's wake.

Was able to locate this image of an example of the "donuts-on-a-rope" aircraft trail taken in 2013. Compare it with your third photo in the post quoted above.

Should you elect to tear into the bike for a restoration please begin a thread on it in the juvenile bicycles forum.

Do you understand the purpose for the transverse dimpled hole through the frame's seat tube just above the level of the chainguard?

Thank you again for posting.

Hi, thanks for the info pic. I have been debating whether or not it's for some type of kickstand but that would make it a very odd place for it. It would really need to be a long one so figured there must be another accessory that may have gone there.
