Downtube shifter cable stop for a Varsity?

-
The number of teeth between the 2 chainrings is a bit bizarre.
It's half step gearing. The chainrings are sized to give you a gear ratio halfway in between each of the 5 cogs on the freewheel thereby maximizing your number of useful gear combinations(reducing repetitive ratios).

I had half step gearing on a touring bike..48,44,26 I think it was. I see the point but on this kind of bike I'd rather see a wider spread between the 2 rings

traditional modern race/road bike cable stops fit well over the Varsity down tube shifter braze ons. the threading is different but you could use the original screw/bolt

i picked this up from the original owners daughter. I will swap the currant shifters for downtube cable stops and mate them to a schwinn stem shifter
