Wore out three sets of tires already!
...for the love of drop stands on vintage bikes. That's me.
I’ll start this thread off with our ’38 Schwinn BC. When we acquired this lady in blue, named “Bonnie Blue”, from a good friend a couple of years ago, she initially had a Miller kickstand. One of the many reasons why I wanted this bike was that this model had a short rear fender, which she may have had a drop stand originally, I thought. Definitely. So that is what I did.
After reading Tyler’s, @mr.cycleplane, thread specifically on Schwinn’s drop stands, I had what I believe was the 2nd version. This ’38 has formed fender braces, and it would work, but not correct. Here is a quick description from Tyler's Prewar Schwinn rear drop stands thread here. “The third variation of the stand (1938) came about with the development of the 'formed' fender braces that attached to the axel directly. Also the rivet which held the stand to the ears was moved lower and the stand itself was shortened.” Thanks Tyler for your descriptive input on these.
So did some modifications from an earlier Schwinn drop stand, and made it like Schwinn’s version 3, to accept the formed braces. Take a look
"Bonnie Blue" our '38 Schwinn BC
Schwinn's drop stand version 2
After removing stand from ears, prepped to fill in the holes
Don't mind my amateur welding
Earlier versions of Schwinn's drop stands were straight. Gave this stand a couple of bends. Looks better too.
Before drilling new rivet holes, needed to locate the exact placement so that the stand lines up in two directions.
Before...
...and after. Ears cut and new rivet holes drilled.
Final results. Stand is now lined up to vertical fender brace...
...and chain stay.
