Looks like you have some fugly looking welds . I would clean that area up carefully and examine it closely. If needed ( and it really is a bad weld) - have it rewelded , and reshaped . You'll be happy you did . AND.................If it was bad welds , that could easily become a safety issue. Good luck with your upgrade, Thanks for sharing . 🤓
 
Thanks Curtis, im sure it’s just the decades of home spray bombs you see. just to make sure, I wire brushed off some of the layers…

You asked about being able to tell the year of the fork if it is a pre-55…I believe prewar bikes had thinner struts then postwar bikes if anyone can elaborate on this that would put it 46 to 55 at least a little closer
