Look Ma, No Hands!
It happened! For those of you who may have seen my previous posts about racing my 1948 Dayton Huffman in the Michigan Gravel Racing Series, this past weekend was the first race to actually include a class for vintage bikes. It was the Dirty 30 Gravel Race in Saranac, MI and the vintage class ran the 16 mile loop called the "Unclean 16". Rules were fairly simple, your bike had to be 25 years or older. We had 16 riders participate, with bikes ranging from 1910 to 1992, some stock, some quite custom. We had a blast, made new friends and made ourselves known. Good, no great times! Hopefully this will spark something and will continue to grow :)

Here are some pictures of all of the riders and their bikes pre-race. Also, the first pic is during the race of my son and I (he's on a '38 Western Flyer).

That’s fantastic. I was set to race a vintage MTB at the Leesburg Bakers Dozen a few years ago, but the race was cancelled. Too bad because aside from wanting to race the old rig, the race venue and organization was top notch.

It was just confirmed that the vintage class will be back in 2025 for this particular event. Next year will probably have 2 distances for the Vintage Class, 16 miles and 30. There is also male and female categories for each distance. Just follow this website later this year for updates on next year's race if interested in joining us:

Very interesting to see how many different ideas on what the best way is to set up a bicycle for the ride. My vote is The Coppertone Varsity for the win. And the Blue Typhoon a close second.

Interesting that your choices happen to be Schwinns.🤔 A bit biased perhaps?😂😂😂 (jus' givin' you da business) Solid choices.

I am intrigued in the setups as well. I'm diggin 399 as well because it reminds me of my 1919 Mead Ranger arch frame. Think it would go faster if his chain wasn't upside down?🤔
