Those early racers were a pretty feisty bunch.

wow. in my 20's I did Centuries in the 7.5 hour range on a (then) modern 12 speed road bike on nice roads. the fastest riders in the chart there were doing it on 40 lb single speeds. !!!!

there must not have been many hills there.
