Rare opportunity to own a phenomenal set of transitional hybrid 'cycle skates' from the John Jay Young Automobile Cycle Skate Co. ca. 1905.
These were a pivotal development coming on the heels of the bicycle boom and are aligned with multiple other varieties of period foot powered transportation developments.
The set is the finest example of their kind that I have seen, retaining most of the original nickel plating and most of the original straps.
They are uncleaned and as found.
The design of the skate overall is very impressive and warrants close study to really appreciate how finely made they are.
They are very large measuring at just over 20" long on roughly 5" diameter wheels. Excellent size for display alongside a collection of historical / transitional bicycles. Length is adjustable using the bolt through the central barrel of the skate.
Attached are a couple period advertisements and images of these skates in use including a noteworthy image of a modified motorized set.
Also attached is an image of a rather well known set of cycle states some of you may recognize from Europe in the Ritter pattern. To serve as comparison this set of skates has been at Copake and other venues being offered at a staggering $7,000.
The price for this excellent set is $750 plus actual shipping.
Open to hearing trade offers etc.
