Funky balloon cranks… Any clue?

I live for the CABE
I picked up a 1948 Speigel Airman last night, and while it’s Monark-built, the cranks are a new one for me. The sprocket side has had heat applied and the arm bent out a bit to promote chain guard clearance, but I don’t recall having ever seen this style crank. The crank arm faces are flat and the sides taper back creating a triangular profile. Any clues folks? Thanks in advance!
