G&J Model 38 coaster brake

Finally riding a big boys bike
I would appreciate it very much if someone would please offer some advice about this brake. It came to me in pieces, consequently I'm unclear about the location of the two small spacers. Are they 180° apart, do they go on opposite sides of the bottom piece in the photo, or do they go together side by side. The split ring fits into the groove of the brake parts. Thanks much for your help.

Hi Craig
Here is picture of the brake from a 1901 Columbia catalogue ABC Hub Coaster Brake.
if its the same coaster it does not show the spacers . Could they be to take up wear of the brake shoes

I have one without any and one with at least two possibly three. The one without any is a later one and has pope engraved in it. The one with the plates is an earlier one without any markings. Here is the position of the two plates I can definately tell are there: (fingers mark locations)

Here is the position of the possible third:

I do have two more but they are in bikes at the moment. It also looks like the plates you have are thicker.

I think I'm getting a better understanding now on how these parts work. What I have is incomplete. There should be a spacer in between each of the coaster brake parts which are hardened steel. The spacers on the other hand are soft steel which act more or less like cushions. Unlike bearing parts where the hardened races and steel balls are in constant contact, these brake parts without the spacers would be banging into each other and could possibly shatter. It sort of makes sense now.
