Fellow caber allowed me to photograph this. It's a postwar fork leg with prewar circle type drain holes. Most I have seen are rectangle shaped.

Interesting observation. I have never noticed the drilled hole, and like you the only thing I noticed was the square/rectangle hole. It looks like they might have saved one step by "not drilling" the hole before the fork end was flattened. I'd bet the square/rectangle hole was pressed into the metal during the flattening step.

It's always interesting to notice the small subtle differences that took place over the past 100 plus years.
