I bought a small trailer that will haul 4 bikes. I want to leave the pedals and handlebars on. It has a low deck height so loading will be easier. I have a lot of projects, so for now it has only been cleaned up and painted.

If you alternate the direction of the bikes, presumably you won't have to remove handle bars or pedals.

Furniture pads work great & fairly cheap at Harbor Freight. But I've spent over 25 years in the moving industry, many loading/unloading trucks. I drape one over every other bike when hauling a truckload & make sure pedals align in the large triangle of the frame & keep 'em tight to limit movement. Alternating direction helps. The pads are also useful for picnics, camping, dog bed, emergency blanket, and protecting furniture. Handy things to have!

Preferred method: Removal of handlebar & pedals makes it much easier & much less chance of damage if possible.👍

Used to I would do this but now I remove the pedals. Just too easy for a pedal to get into a downtube and scratch some paint.
Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking about trying flask clamps as used in chemistry labs to keep the downtubes separated. I can always return them if they don't work.

Thanks for the photos. Strapping to an enclosed trailer B6 sides sounds good. I figured that alternating the direction of the bikes might eliminate the need to remove handlebars and pedals.

Where did you get all the foam? I checked into 4 inch twin size mattress toppers. They're $45--$55 each.
Carpet padding is cheap!

I used to lay carpet. We threw out used padding.

Good tip and the largest ones are on sale at HF right now.
