I used to have a 48 Comet, can't find a photo of it, another Caber now owns it. There's a picture of it in the "Hawthorne" book and it's probably the frame you have.

I removed the head badge today and worked on it gently with a magic eraser, I managed to get rid of the blue overspray. It looks like the bike was originally red!

My 1947 Girls Snyder Hawthorne (74EH) has the blue paint on aluminum head badge.
So, I guess it is the red color in 48-49; was there ever one in black paint also (?).
Hmm, I never really noticed! It could depend in the bike color too. Also, keep in mind the frame code is when the frame was made, it could have been made in late '47 as a '48 model.
