Wore out three sets of tires already!
As some of you may remember, I’m building a bike for a friend that beat cancer this year, and I just got the wheels back from being built, so I was entering what I thought was the home stretch, but I just discovered that while the rear cog I bought may fit older Sturmey Archer hubs, it doesn’t fit a modern 5 speed.

Does anyone have a source for such a thing?

With a 4" grinder you can carefully grind off every other tooth, just make sure that you're starting out w/ an even number. I believe your cog has 18 so you are good to go. It's not that difficult, just another dimension to the project, good luck with it.

This may be your lucky day! Last year I purchased a 24 tooth, 1/2" pitch Sturmey Archer cog in the large 5-spd center opening size you need....by accident. I modified/finished it by cutting 1/2 the teeth off so it is skip tooth compatible. Message me for price, happy to move it along..pete

I have found that the steel is far better in the thinner Sturmey cogs than the wider, cheapie ichi cogs. Much quieter as well with better tooth/chain shape match. Not sure if it would make for uneven chain wear, particularly if the Chainring and cog are not aligned well and the modified cog runs on only one side of the chain rollers all the time. You can flip the chain yearly to solve that. I have not had any issues with any conversions myself and have seen no wear on them. should go on dond thread?🙂
