BOBBike

On Training Wheels
I have a Vaterland bill from Germany that came with a tire pump and a tool bag. I do have them both. The tires are 29” and from Belgium. The only thing that seems to be restored or a unoriginal remake is the seat. I have only been able to find two other instances of photos of the same or similar year bike. One is from pics on a bike ride near Santa Cruz and the other is of a soldier on a Vaterland bike that is a little different, in the bottom picture below. I am trying to find out how rare it actually is, if someone can tell me for sure what year it is, it’s value and anything else about it?

Looks like a decent bike but I think what you have is a rider. European bikes usually don’t command a lot of attention on this side of the pond unless they are really old and unusual. V/r Shawn

Thanks for posting; fine job with the pictures.

Regarding chainset -

appears to be a Thun pattern set

have you had it apart yet?

how is chainwheel affixed to arm; is it swaged or is there a lockring which threads on at the backside?

Dating -

Fichtel & Sachs hubs usually have markings on their barrels which will at least give a bracketing of date if not a specific one.

I just have the chain ring. I got it with some other antiques and thought that maybe I could make a great clock out of it. Sorry, I don’t have any further information on it?

I also posted another post which was about a chainring by itself. When I responded below I thought that was in reference to the other post. Here are some further pictures. I hope this helps. Thanks for all your help and sorry about the confusion and this correct late response.

Does anyone know anything about my whole Vaterland bike? I have a separate single chain ring completely separate from the bike I am interested in finding about too but mainly info on my bike.

Like @juvela said, your rear hub, made by Fichtel and Sachs, should have a date code. From your pictures, I'm guessing the "56" in your first hub picture is the year, 1956. Other than that, all I can say is it looks to be in good shape, especially for a '50's bike. Lube it and ride it!
