Grampa's Schwinn

On Training Wheels
Just got a bike that I'm having a hard time getting a make and year. It looks like a 50's ladies balloon tire with painted rims, no tank, just Schwinn on the chainguard. The serial number on the bottom of the frame at the crank is 7328597, just numbers, no letter prefix. It has a skip tooth chain, so it has to be earlier than 50's. Any ideas on a year or model?

Model is a D37X and you must be mistaking the number 7 for a letter at the beginning of the serial. Closer inspection or a good close up picture should reveal a preceding letter. Very nice example too!

I'm thinking the 7 might be a Z.

The 1" pitch chains were used in the first half of the 50's and were history after 1954.

1950

What great insight! Looking closer at the bottom part of the 7 it was faded, but there! Now it all comes together, thank you very much!

A friend just happened to be at the right place at the right time and got it for me. It was always stored indoors. It rides beautiful. I'm surprised the chrome is in such good shape. The stem wraps around the handlebars and the head bolt hold the bars in place as well as the stem in the head tube, I've never seen that before. Of course in a novice at pre 60's bikes. I worked at a Schwinn shop in the 70's during the oil embargo and can build wheels and wrap road bars with my eyes closed.

It’s difficult to tell from the picture but I’m wondering if the kickstand is built in or “detachable” (Schwinn’s terminology) as some were in the era.

That stem was used on the Ladies models and I've seen it or a similar one on all the Juvenile bikes. The detachable stand didn't show up until 1953.

This is pretty cool! You have to be into this for quite some time to get to know details and get reference info. I know details and differences on the 60's & 70's bikes from actually working on them as a kid and at the bike shop. Thanks for sharing!
