Phattiremike

Cruisin' on my Bluebird
I got this bike close to home today. The guy said it’s early 20’s. It’s badged Rover but does not say Colson on the badge like others I’ve seen, the sprocket looks Colson. Nice original bike, the grips don’t appear to be correct, overall nice shape deep maroon with pins visible everywhere, the rims are flat not drop center with great pin strips and 28” tires. It screams for a tank I think... I’ve included a picture of the serial #,

Mike

Oct 1933. same as my Flyer. Looks like a 28-er. 26 balloon and 28-ers were both made this year. Different frames and forks for each wheel size. Have you measured the wheel diameter?

Sure about that date? AFAIK, Colson didn't start date stamping their frames until '37, with a separate 2 digit stamp. I'm currently gathering pre-37 serials to see if there's a pattern...

Never absolutely FM65!! From what I have read thus far, they changed the numbering for Colsons two or three times, I have no idea when the changes occurred and saw in I think your thread somewhere that it is not figured out yet, so yea, you should be skeptical. I do have the original 26"/45mm wide Lobdel 559(563mm) clincher/ballooner wheelset from the black tanker, and have seen them also on the 34 Hi-Lo's. Those owners say their 26" ballooner Colson 2-spd moto SN's were decipereed, and so I figure the serials would be related...good question though. What caught my eye was PhatTM's serial number being so close to mine. Anyone know or have opinions pre-37? .The 28-er in question above sure looks close to my serial number set. Would like to see HI-Lo owners post their serial numbers..

So the 3 means 1933, which ends in the number 3; and J, the 10th letter of the alphabet, means October which is the 10th month of the year, in Elyria OH.

About that explicit level of assurance - perhaps it might be explained, that there is a qualification that, if the serno is in the 3J pattern et seq. then one may be "reasonably" assured that it is from October 1933. And if it is any one of the other sequencing systems (or none), then good luck, (but not in this case)?
I don't have a 1937 bike with 28" wheels, but there is always a possibility, maybe my Colson lugged frame, with a Silver King badge.

The handle bar is upside-down.
