Seventy miles on a flat, paved trail is certainly doable. The main factors are making sure your cog/sprocket sizes are set up for a comfortable ratio, and making sure you have a good-fitting saddle. With a flat ride like that, the 3 speed will functional reliably, but it's a long enough ride that an uncomfortable saddle will really start to bite.
