1) Buy two #18 springs at Ace or any other hardware store (around $3.50 each).
2) Use a hacksaw to cut off one of the end loops.
3) Grind a short piece of dowel rod, saw it and place in the hole ON THE LOOP END.
4) Vice the springs and pound the plugs into the springs or glue them.
5) Bolt the springs straight up with the axel nuts.
6) Place a pinwheel or flag into the holes after shimming them with tape.
7) Tape the pinwheel or flag to point forward with clear tape. Make four and put two flags in the back. Pee Wee Herman would do it!
8) The spring can be bent outward and can stay on the bike when not in use.
9) Better yet, help the kid to do it, like a good father or grandfather would.

great idea, thanks for posting
My friend has had this for years. I have followed the great strides in treatment, lately, through him. He had to use a lobster bike when we rode around Chicago. We went to old Megs Airfield, which is now a park, and rode with tandem bikes that had blind people on the back of each one. Exercise is the best thing for this ailment? Best of luck to you. Ray

Exactly what my docs said about my Parkinsons and spinal stenosis. Ultimately they will both win and my annual mileage will probably drop to about 1200 this year but at this point I intend to wear out, not rust out.

Problem is I'm getting closer to wearing out every year.
