Ebay has listings for "vintage bicycle brake cable clamps". I imagine other bike shops offer them too.
 
I've used the chrome tie straps. Cut the strap close to the locking point and hard to tell it's not a metal strap. And won't scratch paint just like regular tie straps.
 
How vintage are you looking for? I've seen some lashed on with a kind of Turks Head knot with string that looked great. There are some simple old cable ties like these:
