On Training Wheels
I just bought this Schwinn today. I'm trying to figure out what model it is and how original (or not) it is. Any info on the bike is greatly appreciated. Not concerned with value, just planning on riding it. Also, any tips on stripping the spray paint while keeping what's under intact also helpful. Serial # H098945 Thanks! -Ryan

That bike didn't have a model name at the time, and it's not a Hornet. The D-69 Equipped was named the Hornet in 1952 and it was pretty much a decked out bike. The model number on your bike was probably a D-53 Standard Equipped or a D-62 Standard Unequipped. Your front fender with holes for a light and indents in the fender would indicate a D-53, so then you're missing the truss rods also. The standard unequipped had no light or truss rods.

Here's the 1952 catalog image of the D-62 and D-53, no catalog pics for the 51 models.

Welcome to the Cabe! ..........................................And I'd just repaint it and not mess with trying to strip off that heavy coat of paint in hopes of salvaging any original paint.
