Does anyone know what the red insert was made out of? I red elsewhere that it was red vellum. any help is appreciated.

It was originally Celluloid. Any thin red plastic should allow a reasonable facsimile.

Yes, it was that newfangled celluloid (at least on my 1912). It's pretty much a primary red and there are plenty of modern plastic sheets that would be a match (not that 99.99% of people would notice or know the difference).
