Bicycle manufacturers were adept at the kind of precision work needed to make ammunition, fuses, artillery parts, etc. Raleigh also made artillery-related goods and equipment, particularly ammunition fuses and Bofors gun related items.

Mark, thank you for posting this important documentation of Schwinn's history.
Could the lady have been Frank's Sister? Brownie's and Betty's mother?
That looked like the Schwinn Factory Cafeteria (photo #7), which would tie into the activity signs. I have had lunch in the Cafeteria while attending the Factory Service School. Thanks for the memories your photos bring.

He supposedly wasn’t a fan of the Kaiser or of Hitler
If Ignaz wasn't a fan of the Kaiser, that would explain why he emigrated. Although I've got to say that moustache would look right at home with a pickelhaube.

Hi John, I’m glad you like the pictures. Decided to do a little more research regarding the woman pictured with Frank at the “E” awards ceremony. The February 1953 issue of American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist magazine covers the Bicycle Institute of America’s annual convention and shows a picture of Frank standing between two women, the one to his right holding a purse is his wife.

From what I understand it was part of the reason. Chicago being a leading bicycle producer and about to have a worlds fair were also factors

My Schwinn days are much later than this time period.
Richard Schwinn sure has his dad's (Edward) smile.

Thanks, John

It is funny I stumbled on this today. We just uncovered several 78s of the Army-Navy E ceremony from the Schwinn vault. We are working on securing a way to play them to learn what they are.
Hi, could you check on what the diameter of these records are in inches? If they are a larger size than the standard 78’s they could be audio transcription discs and require specialized turntable and possible needle. I also have a couple of records from the ceremony and mine are audio transcription discs, at this point I’ve not yet found the proper machine and needle to play them with.
