Nice example of the "new" American.
The American was released in mid 1954 and then it was discontinued after the 1958 model year. It was replaced with the Speedster for 1959, 1960 and half of 1961. In mid 61 the American took its place back in the lineup and the Speedster was discontinued.

Been there, done that!!!Good for you! My first Schwinn was a 61 just like yours only blue. Be carefull, as it started the fever in me for the hobby.. That fever now accounts for 5 B6's, 5 Deluxe Autocycles, an Aerocycle and several other lesser models.
