Better check both again. The Chestnut is a 1981 and most likely with an MR serial. I think the Red one is a 1983. Check the build dates on the head badges. Nice looking examples.

Look Ma, No Hands!
Can someone help me understand why these things are so popular? I see them for $300-$500, and I don't get it. Late 70s/early 80s Schwinns aren't all that popular, and for that money you could buy 2 or 3 decent Typhoons (I know, not a ballooner).

I like them simply because there are a lot less of the ballooners than middleweights.

First of all they are the end of the line for Chicago Schwinns. I think the combination of a middleweight frame and balloon tires from the factory attracts people. Also lots of guys lived through the beach cruiser days and these were the standard. I think at the time the Typhoon was on the decline and you see more cruisers then Typhoons.

Balloon Tire Cruiser models are a way better ride than a middleweight. Ride one and you will understand.
Schwinn is known for the iconic cantilever frame 26"/ 24" / 20" models and these are the last of the U.S.A. Built Schwinn Quality Bicycles.
