Well, here's my Cruiser as she sits now.

Got this a few weeks back off of ebay. Everything needs grease, there’s some wonky cable routing, and the seat is incorrect but still comfortable and far more aesthetically pleasing to my eye than the correct unit. Got the enormous bicycle license sticker off lickity split with a heat gun (my wife said “why do you care about that? You can’t see it when you’re sitting on the bike.” Girls!). No restoration, just a good service and preservation of the current state of decay.

Born June 12, 1979. May of ‘79 stamp. Damage to head badge caused by a large basket the original owner had installed. I bought a pair of properly aged badge screws from Bicycle Bones and am keeping this badge as is.

Can’t tell if the guard has a new decal or not. Red primer under the paint in multiple spots, but I can’t see a border on the Spitfire decal or a ghost of anything previous. Looks much newer than all the other decals.

I wish my 79 Spit 5 guard looked that good. They are actually a screened paint. All the decals on mine were nearly gone and the guard had faded somewhat and was at the point that if I wiped it down it would disappear. I cleaned around the screening and shot two coats of clear over the guard.

Now that you mention it, I wonder if this guard hasn’t been cleared. It gleams compared to the rest of the bike, almost too much. It might go into semi-retirement on the wall over my bench. You can’t really tell from the pics (seller’s pics), but everything has a bit of light corrosion on it, which is my kind of clear coat. Heaven knows I’m getting pretty crusty.
