Missing Serial Number Digit in 1966??

Just picked this baby up, exactly like my first bike as a kid, so I obviously had to have it! Supposed to be a 66 missing the second digit of the serial number, which would be a B. What I was told is that in the first week of 1966 all Schwinns were missing the second digit because the stamp was messed up until they caught it. Is there solid information confirming this?

Yes there was a stamping error the first month of 1966.

I see. Very cool! I've heard it's not considered rare but there has to be some rarity to owning a first run 1966 Schwinn with date code errors.

I like where a head tube actually has two stampings, one on the top left and one on the bottom right. The one on the top left was upside down. I have pictures of a 1970 tandem that has two serial numbers, one on the head tube and one on the left rear drop out. This was done when Schwinn was changing the locations of the serial numbers.

I recently picked up a 73 standard Sting Ray, just because, it was exactly like the one I had, when I was a kid.
Fun reliving our youth.

I’ve had the twin to my first Stingray that I purchased back in the late 90’s.

I received this New ‘66 Violet Deluxe when I was 12 years old.
I don’t know what the occasion was, but I was an extremely Happy Boy.

This bike brings back a flood of fond memories for me.
