Thanks everyone for your help.
My model A is now cleaned and degreased. Will grease and oil it finally when the replacement sprocket arrives.
No heat or mallet was required in the end!

So which way was it; was the sprocket right-hand threads, and the lock-ring left-hand, like an original Bendix?
Or were they the opposite.
Threads always seem 100 times tighter, when I am turning them the wrong way.

Exactly that @Archie Sturmer . Sprocket was right-hand; lock ring left-hand thread.
