I'm not sure what's up with the cranks and pins. I thought at first one might be in backwards, but it might not be that after all. Have to take it apart and see. It has some signs that in the distant past someone tried to do some mechanical work and gave up. I'll pull it apart this week and see how things go. Might as well do a total going over for it.

slightly surprised to see this tubing transfer in residence on a machine of mcmlxx

artwork appears that o' an earlier epoch

wonder if perhaps someone discovered a carton (pallet!) of these in the warehouse and a supervisor ordered that they be used up...

as recalled, the 2030 transfer had been changed by this date

SirMike shall knoweth!

The large diamond 2030 was used at various times, particularly in the 1950s, and then revived for certain bikes in the late 1960s into the early 1970s. The later period involved apparently inconsistent use, at least in the US market. These diamond 2030 decals seem prone to drying out and flaking away. It's hard to find a really good, intact one. The use of the diamond 2030 decal does not seem to be 100% consistent in the late 60s and early 70s. I've seen them mainly on Superbes and Sprites. This is the first halfway decent one I've seen on a DL-1 of this vintage. But it could be they just don't survive very well... I'm thinking of ordering a replacement from H. Lloyd in England. I like how the light-colored diamond 2030 goes with the black paint.

Strangely enough, there is no heron decal on the back fender, and I see no signs it ever had one. Thinking I'll put one from H.Lloyd on the rear fender. I do like how the heron looks on the back fender.

The previously shown Raleigh DL-1 is rebuilt. It's nice having a bike in decent condition to start with. It makes the work easier. Rough projects tend to bog down with all kinds of additional repairs once you get into the job. It helps that Raleigh's black paint is so durable and polishes up so nicely. The frame decals from H. Lloyd in England are great - very close to the originals.

The bike has a large, 24-tooth rear cog. Gear ratio is 2:1. The low gearing and oversized Schwalbe tires give the bike a very "slow but steady" feel. It's a comfortable rider with those large tires and the triple spring roadster saddle. The 48-24 gearing is about as big as the chain guard will hold. But it's nice having it for the hills around here...
