Cruisin' on my Bluebird
My wife and I were at her family reunion in Black River Falls, Wisconsin a few years ago and found this museum in Sparta, Wisconsin called the DEKE SLAYTON MEMORIAL SPACE & BICYCLE MUSEUM.
This last year we went back for another family reunion and visited the museum again so I let the cell phone camera go crazy while walking through the second floor of this museum to try to capture a nice array of bicycles. The time span is from a replica hobby horse to modern day bicycles.
The outdoor bicycle sculptures are neat and the large sculpture in the park is named“Ben Bikin' ” and you can see it's height with me standing in front of it and is quite the sight.
The street signs in the town also have a high wheel bicycle image on them.
SPARTA is known as the “Bicycling capital of America” and has many off road trail loops for mountain biking and pleasure riding.
The paved asphalt and cement town streets are flat and this would be be a great place for a CABE or WHEELMEN meet. I'm sure the museum would welcome an organized event and would put it in their monthly newsletter so feel free to contact Alyssa at the museum shown below.
Bicycles have been donated for decades and I am going to donate a hub lamp for the G&J high wheel bicycle they have since it is the only adult sized high wheel bicycle there and is missing this historic accessory. If you want to feel generous, this museum can use your items.
There are showcases also filled with accessory items and catalogs that have been donated as well.
The contact for the museum is: Alyssa Young (curator) (608) 269-0035 at the museum and her email is: [email protected]
They have cool T-shirts with their logo (shown at the beginning of this posting) and other things in their gift shop & have an online store for merchandise purchases as well.
Enjoy the photos as I could only post 25 photos in this posting but there is a lot more than I have shared.
Visit them when you have the chance as it is educational with the lower floor being filled with astronaut Deke Slayton's history and the space program.
