Hello All - Im crazy.... im restoring a vintage 1973 MENS Schwinn 10 SPEED Suburban. It's not worth much and im tearing my hair out reattaching the derailleur cables for the left and right gear changers. The edges are frayed which makes it impossible to get the cable thru the small eyelets at the end point. Wondering where I can find some replacement cable. Im ready to mimic "Office Space", and take a sledge to this thing. Also, is there a trick to feed those cables thru the tiny eyelets? GRATEFUL for any replies.. thanks.

the cycle's shift levers are made to take the Huret type cable end which is disc shaped
pretty much all the other derailleur manufacturers use a cable end which is pear shaped
generic replacement cables come double ended; disc on one end and pear on the other
the user trims off the one not required
if cables are cut with a tool not expressly made for the purpose the cut end will mash and fray
purpose made cutters for braided cable squeeze down toward the centre from all directions as they cut so as not to fray the end
as you have discovered frayed ends are impossible to thread into openings...

If you don't have a cable cutter, a cutting disc on a Dremel does a good job.

when you have completed the recabling it is wise to fit cable end caps which prevent the end from fraying
that way cables can be rethreaded should such be found necessary in the future

I'm the Wiz, and nobody beats me!
What I do on most of my 10 speeds that I go thru is reusing the rear derailleur cable for the front derailleur after I cut off the frayed end so I can thread it in casing and guides. Then I only need one new cable to redo the bike.

Search the bay, all categories for: bicycle brake cable cutter
You will find several, all exactly the same, with red colored handle but with no specific branding for approx $16 - $17 total cost.
You do not need the PARK TOOL CN-10 version that sells for more than $40 or the PEDRO's version for $27.
They are basically all functionally exactly the same.
The PARK TOOL version might last longer if you're doing 100+ bicycles.
The PEDRO's version, I believe is exactly the same as the generic red handle cheapie, except with different colored handle and the PEDRO's logo onboard.
I've done a lot of bicycles with the generic unbranded red handle cheapie. It is as good as the PARK TOOL or PEDRO's version.
Now at one time you could possibly buy it for a few bucks less from one or two chinese vendors, but you might not experience the ten to fourteen days shipping time that was normal pre-pandemic.

Many Walmart stores once carried the Bell Pitcrew 600 Replacement Cable Set in the store near the bike pumps, seats, accessories, etc. Typically this item sells out often in stores because it is the best cable set for little money. Now, remember though that ACE stores DO NOT STOCK THIS ITEM IN THEIR STORES, It was Only Available On Their Website.
