thank you to the people interested in the badges, but those badges are NFS to badge collectors
I will consider selling one if you actually have a bike needing one of them, send and post pictures of your badgeless bike
thanks for the replies from @Blue Streak ..... as always for the great research, please keep it coming as you pull off more of your magic

would it be possible that the bike is a 1898?
my fork crown is the older Hartford style and not the as advertised in the Pope catalogue
my right crank attachment is also completely different
and my headbadge says it is manufactured by the Hartford Cycle Co. instead of Pope
my frame also has lugged joints as opposed to flush joints as described in the Pope catalogue

Hartford Cycle Company was established in 1889 by Pope Manufacturing Company for the making of a cheaper grade of bicycle. 1897 Hartford Pattern Nos. were 1-2, 7-8 and 9-10.

Here are some pages from 1898 Pope Mfg. Company catalog which includes Columbia, Hartford (made by Hartford Cycle Co) and Vedette (first year model and made by Hartford Cycle Co.) bicycles.

1898 Hartfords are Pattern 7 & 8 only. Frames are lugged and crankset looks similar to yours, but fork crown image does not match yours.

A couple 1897 -1898 Hartford Pattern 8's have sold at Copake over the years. They have fork crowns that match yours so maybe what is shown in the catalog was not always used in production or 1898 forks were carried over into 1899 on women's only until inventory ran out then they changed to the new fork design.

Thank you.
It could be a carry over of parts like you said.
