Need help with ID...Painted over moto-bike

-

Steve K

Finally riding a big boys bike
Need some help with this.
Beautifully painted with a white house paint...probably contains lead.
Moto-bike style, with Morrow brake/hub combo.
Chain ring looks to be Elgin(Columbia-Westfield Built) Serial number M94772 (1948? Columbia-Westfield)
Rear facing drop-outs, but no tabs for drop stand. Came with regular kick-stand. Peaked fenders but no hole in front fender for light.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

1934 Westfield built Model M9......Superb Motobike was the Columbia version. Here's the Columbia version:

1934 columbia pg6-7.jpg

So it's a 1934 Elgin built by Westfield moto-balloon. The only thing that looks out of place to me are the peaked fenders but I'm sure others will weigh in on those. Nice find!!!!! Those are some "nutty" nuts on those rear drop-outs.

Nice Elgin! Howdy from 80 miles west! That Morrow hub should be dated also, I think D=1934, but there was some discussion over the dates a couple years back, and I don't remember if I wrote down those codes before or after that!

Thanks y'all for the great input.;)
The serial number that starts with M has me still a bit perplexed if the bicycle is a Columbia-Westfield built bike for the M would signal 1948 and she seems more like a 1930's style bicycle.
The hub is pretty rusty, but I see if I can find a date code.
I am beginning to think that the fenders were not original for it seems like the gap between tires and bike looks more like it could have had 28 inch tires.
Say Adam...Are you going to the Mt. Airy show in a little less than 2 weeks?
Thanks
Steve

Steve, No need to be perplexed, Westfield reused alphas to begin their serial numbers. You can rest assured your bike is a 1934. M was used in 1921, again in 1934, again in 1948-49, and and finally in 1963. Yours is a 1934, the frame is the same as the Columbia I posted earlier. The M serial plus the 9 denotes model #M9 in 1934.

Thanks Gary for that additional serial number info.
The bike just did not look to be a 1948 model. It is still missing the tabs for the dropstand that I have on my other Columbia built Elgins but perhaps there was an option for a dropstand equipped with the tabs attached to it.(Like my Shelby)

Adam...After a lot of effort I can see that the hub is dated I3 or 1939.
I have concluded that the fenders and wheels are not original to the bike for it does have too much space for the 26 inch rims.
Just a crust old ratty bike that with a little TLC and some other effort would make for a fund crusty old rider.
Thanks again.
