Bozman

Wore out three sets of tires already!
I just picked up this heavily over painted Hawthorne Flyer. Wrong 26 inch wheel set. But pretty complete save missing truss rods and needs a new seat. Serial number G75696.

Any idea of the year? It has a Morrow rear hub that I will eventually clean off but don't know if it's original to the bike because it's on a 26×1.375 wheel set.

Thank again for all your help

Boz

Not sure it is a Hawthorne. Badge looks added and not originally on the frame which looks Westfield or Great Western to me. These old "assortment bikes" or modified, painted and parts-swapped bikes are very hard to id. Doesn't look like a Hawthorne unless it is really early...mid-late 20's 28"-er regardless I believe.....(believe=don't know) Need better pics of fork crown, fender bridges and seat tube top cluster.

I'll take some more detailed pics and post them. I agree it does looks more Great Western or Westfield styled. I'll look at the Morrow hub and see what the date code reveals.

“G” may indicate Westfield built about 1929-G, a crash bike. Chain ring looks like a Westfield from a distance. Seat post cluster looks Westfield from a distance.
Montgomery Ward did acquire bikes from Westfield, I believe after another local Chicago manufacturer, I believe after Great Western. So it might not be an either or, but perhaps a both.
Later, MW may have acquired bikes from the Snyder-Excelsior plant; and from the startup CWC after that.
I have seen a 1930-H Westfield-built MW Hawthorne with a 5 flat ovals chain ring; it was a blue under some black repaint.
I have seen a 1927-E Westfield-built bike with another double “D” drive chain ring for another retailer.
Your bike looks mostly complete standard 19” double bar drop frame; maybe add some modern 700 wheels. Also, looks nice to me, as is.

Thanks Archie! I'm going to strip the paint down on this one and put on some Blunt 35 700c rim sets on this bad boy!
