Yep that’s right..it got naked .... it all started when I noticed the bike was getting a little hard to ride..... i knew it was a new old stock setup so I was confused .... so I decided to explore.. first I removed the unit from the hub.. the unit unscrews out from the shaft turning out. You can’t remove it by just pulling it out once out the brake discs are still inside so I removed them for inspection. First I started to take the unit and removed the retaining nut for the gear removal and bearing removal once off, the enclosed gear unit was dirty and grease was hardened up. To remove the gear cluster you have to slide the retaining ring on the other side.. just slightly tap on the shaft opposite of the gear cluster.. no need to spread it. It just slides off ..it’s a snugg fit from the factory..once the clip is out the shaft will slide out. Clean and grease the shaft ...The cluster can now be removed.. looking at it you can see the grease was getting hard and dirty.. this will cause drag on the wheel and a harder to ride and shifting problems ... notice the cluster is dirty so removal was nessary to clean it right...do do this the spring C clip need removal.. first you push one side of the C clip out of its slot then it comes apart.. the gears and the bearing. An now be cleaned and regressed. Once all parts are cleaned, the cluster can now be assembled.. install bearing first the gears then C clip. Be sure to install the cut out slot of the clip first then one sid of the clip and the. The other. Now it’s ready to install back into the worm gear hub. Reinstall the shaft then slide the clip back on the shaft remember no spreading ...its a tight fit but will go back on by tapping it with pliers lightly.. snugg it lightly not tight.. now assemble the sprocket and retaining nut.. now it’s cleaned and greased..ready for reassembly...this process is time consuming . The shaft rethreads back on till the cluster gear get close to the break gear.. turn the cluster till it seats back in the gear. ....There you go ....it’s in and regreased ready for service... of course you have to readjust the bearing tension...so there is no drag. But that’s another story...

I always soak hub and bearing parts in Acetone then hit them with a wire brush, even NOS stuff.
The pack with Lucas Bearing grease.
