Bicycle Heaven Pittsburg Museum ...

I remember that auction for the $36,000 dollar one, and at the time thinking, that all the guy really got, was a provenance letter stating, that the photograph he got, was actually signed by Paul Rubens.
There was no such statement or provenance that the bike was actually one of the bikes used in the making of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
It may have been the real deal?
Maybe not?
There have definitely been some really good replicas built since that movie came out, so it may be hard to say for sure?

I remember a real one showed up on ebay around 2005ish. It was initially listed as a bike from a prop house...no mention of Pee Wee. I bid $8k but then someone told the seller what it was, he updated the listing and it went nuts..I think $14Kish is what it went for and I heard a museum in hollywood got it. I may have a pic from the auction someplace
That is amazing. . .I am sorry that you missed out on it. Please post the auction photo if you find it.

We did a lot of work for the Hand Prop Room which has a staggering amount of just about everything. You can see some of their bikes, including a red and white Schwinn DX if you click the Vintage Bikes button here:
If you collect anything else, they probably have it.

I don't know if the Hand Prop Room got that DX from us. Most of the prop bikes were budget-conscious builds and since they were usually in the background, we used a lot of Wald parts, prebuilt wheels, retro-looking leather seats, etc., and they were often powder coated by Olympic Powder Coating which was nearby back then. Mike Vorgang, Gertrude's son, did much of the pinstriping but we may have had help with that due to the tight deadline. Unfortunately, we didn't hear what happened to the bikes after filming. I guess we will learn some of the history now!

I have a question, I've heard some of the original bike had the frames reinforced for jumps in the movie. How many were made like that?
Interesting. . . I know that the springs were swapped out with solid dummy springs for jumping, but we did not modify any of the frames. It is certainly possible that some of the frames were modified at the studio but we would not have known. Schwinn frames can take a surprising amount of abuse, so they may have just used what they got from us.

Since we’re on the subject, I had always heard, that the The Pedal Pusher, had also supplied the Black Phantom that George McFly used to peep on Lorraine in Back to the Future?
Is that true? @PedalPusher!Charlie ?
Hi Marty!
I'm pretty sure that we did not get an order for bikes for Back to the Future. We would have seen that as an opportunity to sell another bunch of bikes at the store! It is possible that it was a bike we built for a prop house. The bikes ended up in lots of films, especially during the 80s and 90s.
