Definite two way street. There's guys that know what will be more desired as a complete bike and what has parts that others need and always looking for. They are an asset to the hobby. Most of those guys sell here and we love 'em for making parts available. Then there's the "why did he part it" guys like discussed above. Probably just learning the hard way if you need money don't part out a bike cause your buddy says that's where the real money is. Get a day job (or at least get educated on what your selling).

That’s a shame.
Funny, this past Saturday I sold a prewar frame with fork locally via Marketplace. Cheap, to a nice elderly gentleman who told me all about how he was going to fix it up for his grandson. I was happy to give him the frame for a song.
Not one hour later he has it up on eBay for $300 over what I sold it to him for. 😉 As previously stated- to each their own. I got my asking price, but why feed me a story? The price would be the same if he told me he planned to flip it. Who knows what others are going through or their motives…who’s a parasite and who’s truly hustling to make ends meet.
I would be very mindful who I sell to if it’s something really nice that I care about.
What I hate about the guys that lie is that they think your as stupid as they are. Why lie to justify a purchase? And do they not know most likely you will see their quick re-post, and that's when it's insulting. Must need the money bad, so just be thankful you don't feel you need to B.S. people to make a buck.

I'm just wondering if the guy made a buck or doubled his purchased price money?
Different scenario, same outcome ... A guy buy's a part or bicycle from your spot at a Swap Meet, takes it to his space cleans it, makes it right by changing some parts, another guy comes up and asks him what he wants for it. Sells it, we'll just say double what he paid, you see it go by your spot in different hands ... Is the seller in the wrong, stupid, profiteer ... or knowledgeable purchase? I have seen guys get mad and even in a fight for just that instance.
Seller got what he wanted: next guy profited ... is that wrong?

Personally I don’t see anything wrong with that unless first buyer wasn’t honest with the deal that was struck

I think the second guy can resell it for what ever he wants. It happens all the time. I snooze on stuff all the time cause I’m new or just want to let stuff go.but the story he said is a joke.. This old guy I know..that’s been in the business for longer than I’ve been alive.. told me to once when I started selling stuff to always leave something on the bone for the buyer he says then you will have them for life. You might make a little less initially but they will buy stuff from you for decades. He says do that with hundreds of people you have an huge net of people to sell and buy from on a regular basis. He a Vietnam vet and was on pickers…has a ridiculous collection.. I always try to leave something on what I sell and could give a crap if it gets resold or traded for better.. People message me for something everyday. Since I started playing with bikes four years ago I sold north of 100k on just average parts.. from legit parts bikes!..you don’t have to ruin heirloom bikes to get ahead in bicycle equity. I think my old friend knows what he’s talking about that’s how we met and that’s how I bought 25 bikes from him the last few years he left me meat on the bone.. And back to the original post that bike is not a parts bike it’s worth more as a whole. I politely messaged the seller on eBay he says he has two bikes in that same color scheme and was combining the best parts from both bikes to make one bike then selling the remainder. He considered putting the remaining parts back together and selling them whole..for more money. I was going to tell him about the cabe on eBay message but I already got dinged this week messaging people about outside of eBay. Lol

Very good point. I think it's just that we all have been burned by a person that was indeed unscrupulous. That being said we know nothing about actual circumstances that others experienced. In fact I was looking at the post for the blue straight bar again and the seller has sold some pretty good stuff at good prices. So maybe he's not a bad guy and there is circumstances. I'll leave it at this...we all hate and have no use for scum bags and liars, but we shouldn't judge if we don't know. Still fun to complain and get it out of your system, I guess that's what these treads are for 😉

You guys are right. Parting out bikes, partially kills the history and partially revives some of the dead bikes back to life. I thought about this momentarily and I’m committed myself to slow the butchering. So you can sleep better at night! I sold a lot of complete bikes but I have also parted out some nice bikes along the way to move them faster. Last year I over did it helping out a friend clear out 80% of his collection due to health issues. Specific people think it was greed but I did this completely free for my buddy. Zero commissh! He got back all he spent plus some for the times he got burnt when he was new to the hobby by his own bike friends… Go cry elsewhere if you couldn’t buy his stuff penny’s on the dollar. So if I pissed you off, F- OFF. If I helped you finished that project with the bikes that got parted, YOU’RE WELCOME!

BIG THANKS to the Cabe!!! … and to all of those big names bringing parts & bikes, and parting out bikes back to the circle. Your time is more valuable than some of the mediocre opinions around here. So get paid for what you do!

The parting out will never stop and so the hypocrisy either. I see you buying those parts 👀 and it’s not from Walmart…

My 2c. +1
