Passenger seat or rear rack?

I was going through a late 40s, early 50s Johnson-Smith catalog and came across this...View attachment 1330265

That's a great example of a passenger seat.

Obviously bicycle manufacturers stayed away from any inference that their rear trays were meant for passengers, but that didn't stop us as kids and teens from using them in such a manner.
I guess the old saw; "what the market demands, the market will get" doesn't apply to bicycles.

PAL seat option for Whizzer's . these were beefed up carriers with a seat pan and flat platform on the bottom for passengers feet.
