Look Ma, No Hands!
My brother had a new Apple Krate in 1970 that got stolen, we found the perp, and he had to buy my bro a new bike. Unfortunately, Schwinn was out of Stingrays, except for the unique Stingray Runabout, a 3 speed 16 inch space saver, you drop the seat and bars and it takes less room. My bro had the shame of riding a wierd looking bike.
I made a replica of an Apple back in the 80s, used a 69 frame and original or repro parts, and it's a decent rider, I think I even got a trophy for it. I also found a brown Runabout similar to my brother's.
The ultimate Stingray Krate to me is a rear disc brake model, and they go for pretty good $. I always wanted one, but never thought about a Krate for over $2500. I had $ burning a hole in my pocket, so I had to bite on this one, got up at oh dark thirty, err 3 am to go get it, the seller was meeting me halfway between us, 2 hour drive.. The ad says it all:
The time has come to part with material possessions and simplify life.
This is a 1973 Schwinn Sting Ray Apple Krate.
This particular model year is known for having a rear Disc Brake, whereas many other model years had rim brakes.
I've had this since March 1979, when it was gifted to me by my Father as a Birthday gift.
I am the 2nd owner of this bicycle.
This model is strongly sought after for it's collector value

Picked it up this morning, and it's worse looking than in ad pictures, go figure. The paint is worn off the frame right behind the sprocket, that's some dirt road riding maybe. It should be fun to ride my fat butt around the neighborhood after I clean it up. 1st 4 ad pics. I may pass this on to my son to keep up the history/provenance.
